The Junior Griffins 6U Hockey Program aims to give each player an enjoyable experience while learning new skills and positive character development through the game of ice hockey. Since our Home Rink is outdoors, our on-ice sessions begin a little later in the year compared to most indoor programs. Some might see this as a negative, but we view this as a major positive. In place of being on-ice in September and October, we hold weekly Ball Hockey practices at a brand-new hockey court located in Mott Park
(Flint, MI) until the ice is ready. This allows our young players to familiarize themselves with new teammates, coaches, and the flow of a practice all while developing fundamental skills and a passion for the sport. A key benefit of beginning with Ball Hockey is it eliminates the most challenging and frustrating aspect of ice hockey for a new player: skating. This enhances the player’s confidence, understanding and fundamental abilities in several facets of the sport so they begin the on-ice sessions with a heightened self-confidence and desire to develop their skating ability. When the ice is ready, we
hold two weekly practices that are packed with laughter, competition, and age specific skill development. We follow USA Hockey’s American Development Model in all aspects of our practices. Our designated coaches proficiently instruct our young players with the knowledge they’ve learned from USA Hockey’s Level 1 C.E.P., 6U/8U Module and Foundations of Player Development courses. On
occasion, we invite special guests to instruct our players and mentor our coaches. We believe we can
always MAKE IT BETTER! Throughout the season we also play games with other 6U teams and participate in Jamborees. The fun is off the charts! There’s a 0.001% chance of someone making it to
the NHL, but there is a 100% chance anyone can fall in love with the game of Hockey!
